Maine students help endangered cottontail rabbits
Third-graders at Eliot Elementary School in Eliot, Maine, are helping to protect and raise awareness about the endangered New England Cottontail rabbit.
The students' teacher, Melanie Dodge, said one group of students created a slideshow presentation about the plight of the rabbit, which is being used at the high school and the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Reserve to inform visitors and scientists working to protect the rabbit across New England and the United States.
Other groups wrote letters to President Barack Obama and the National Endangered Species Committee, wrote letters to Eliot residents, created a website linked with the MSAD 35 website, and created cottontail habitat in their back yards.
The students also toured Laudholm Farm at the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve and planted more than two dozen dogwood seedlings for habitat and food for the cottontail.
